Introduction to the Campaign

Chance is a strange thing. It was chance that led to the weather around the village of Maiden Ery to be just right to weaken the soil on one of the nearby hillsides; chance that caused several of the village children to get very bored and run off and play hide and seek. It wasn’t chance that caused the landslide though; just a really poor choice of hiding place that was the last straw for the already stressed earth.

While no one was badly injured, the village healer was called over to be on the safe side, and that was where chance intervened once more; leaning on part of the newly uncovered rock face, the healer felt the pulse of miraculous energies below its surface. A local expert on geology was called in, and when Red Jedd declared “It b’aint natcheral,” the village decided to send news up to the capital.

While initially thought to be just yet another ruin of pre-Kingdom civilisations, the site has aroused no small amount of interest due to what has already been found in the preliminary research. In order to promote co-operation, the Temple of Freedom has come to an arrangement with the Temple of Balance, the Chapel of Humact, the Circle of Magic and the Defenders: the dig will be a joint venture between all of the guilds, who will provide some of their own and aid in the recruiting of those from other guilds to the cause. The intention is that the dig will become a settlement in its own right with its own researchers, practical investigators, local diplomats to the surrounding area, security and patrols.

Word has spread back to the other guilds, and in the spirit of co-operation (and nosiness) they have declared that any of their members wishing to join the dig may do so – and in the spirit of co-operation, the ToF and others have welcomed them with open arms. As no-one strictly knows what has yet been found, there are no specific skills being asked for – simply an interest in finding out what is there.

This year’s campaign base is around the dig; guarding it from looters, providing patrols to the surrounding area as needed, liaising with the local groups, and helping to commit archaeology as only the Barony’s Finest can.
